In 2008, the Journal of Cell Science published a one-page essay that scientists have been quietly passing to their students ever since. The author, a cell biologist named Martin Schwartz, opens it with a story about an old friend from graduate school. She was, in his words, “one of the brightest people I knew,” and she left science. Her reason has probably crossed your mind at some point too: “it made her feel stupid. After a couple of years of feeling stupid every day, she was ready to do something else.”
She was not wrong about the feeling. She was wrong about what it meant. “She later dropped out of graduate school, went to Harvard Law School and is now a senior lawyer for a major environmental organization,” Schwartz writes, so this is not a story about someone who lacked ability. It is a story about someone who read the most reliable signal of learning as a verdict of failure, and acted on the misreading.
Schwartz’s response to her story is the whole essay in two sentences: “Science makes me feel stupid too. It’s just that I’ve gotten used to it.”
That is the idea I want to defend here: if you are learning anything real, you should feel stupid, regularly, maybe daily, and the feeling is not the cost of learning. It is closer to being the mechanism. This is not a self-help slogan. A surprising number of serious people have written whole books circling this one point, each from a different direction: a neuroscientist, a psychologist, an aikido teacher, a Zen master, an organizational psychologist, and a journalist who spent five years studying error. Put them together and the argument gets hard to dismiss.
The scientist who got used to it
Start with Schwartz, because he explains why the feeling blindsides smart people in particular.
“For almost all of us, one of the reasons that we liked science in high school and college is that we were good at it,” he writes. School selects for people who are good at having answers. Then those people arrive at the edge of what anyone knows, and the rules invert: “What makes it difficult is that research is immersion in the unknown. We just don’t know what we’re doing.”
The unknown does not care about your credentials. Schwartz recalls asking his advisors for help with a problem in his PhD: “I remember the day when Henry Taube (who won the Nobel Prize two years later) told me he didn’t know how to solve the problem I was having in his area.” If a soon-to-be Nobel laureate could not answer the question, nobody could, and that was the lesson: “The crucial lesson was that the scope of things I didn’t know wasn’t merely vast; it was, for all practical purposes, infinite.”
Once you accept that, the feeling of stupidity stops being an emergency. Schwartz goes further and makes it a practice. He gives it a name, “productive stupidity,” and a definition: “Productive stupidity means being ignorant by choice.” Important questions are precisely the ones nobody can answer yet, so choosing to work on them means choosing to feel out of your depth. In his words, “if we don’t feel stupid it means we’re not really trying.” He even claims the feeling as fuel: “I actively seek out new opportunities to feel stupid. I wouldn’t know what to do without that feeling.”
Notice what this reframe buys you. If feeling stupid means you are broken, every hard day is evidence you should quit. If feeling stupid means you are at the frontier, every hard day is evidence you are exactly where the interesting work is. Same days, same feeling, opposite conclusions.
Ignorance is the engine
Stuart Firestein ran a neuroscience lab at Columbia and chaired its biology department, and he became so convinced that the public had the wrong picture of science that he created a course called Ignorance and then wrote a book with the same conviction in the title: Ignorance: How It Drives Science.
He opens the book with an old proverb: “It is very difficult to find a black cat in a dark room,” the saying goes. “Especially when there is no cat.” Then he owns it: “This strikes me as a particularly apt description of how science proceeds on a day-to-day basis.”
His argument is that we imagine science as a pile of accumulated facts, when working scientists treat facts as raw material at best. “Working scientists don’t get bogged down in the factual swamp because they don’t care all that much for facts. It’s not that they discount or ignore them, but rather that they don’t see them as an end in themselves.” What they actually trade in is the other thing: “The one big fact is that science traffics in ignorance, cultivates it, and is driven by it.”
The reason is structural, not romantic. Answers terminate. Questions generate. “Questions are more relevant than answers. Questions are bigger than answers. One good question can give rise to several layers of answers, can inspire decades-long searches for solutions, can generate whole new fields of inquiry.” Which is why his picture of science is not an onion you peel to reach a core truth: “Rather it’s like the magic well: no matter how many buckets of water you remove, there’s always another one to be had.”
Firestein’s favorite authority on this is James Clerk Maxwell, arguably the greatest physicist between Newton and Einstein, who put it in one line: “Thoroughly conscious ignorance is the prelude to every real advance in science.”
Sit with that phrase, thoroughly conscious ignorance. It is a precise description of what feeling stupid actually is. Unconscious ignorance feels fine. It feels like confidence. The uncomfortable version, the one that stings, only shows up when you have learned enough to see the size of what you are missing. The sting is not the absence of knowledge. It is the awareness of the absence, and per Maxwell, that awareness is the prelude to every real advance. The best knowledge-generating system humans have ever built runs on the exact feeling most of us treat as a reason to stop.
The story you tell about the feeling
So why do two equally bright people feel the same daily stupidity and one quits while the other builds a career on it? Carol Dweck spent decades at Stanford on essentially this question, and her answer in Mindset is that the feeling itself is neutral. What differs is the theory of ability you run it through.
If you believe ability is a fixed quantity, every difficult moment becomes a measurement of you. If you believe ability is built, the same moment becomes an input. Dweck draws the two worlds sharply: “In one world, effort is a bad thing. It, like failure, means you’re not smart or talented. If you were, you wouldn’t need effort. In the other world, effort is what makes you smart or talented.”
The cleanest evidence in the book is what people say when she asks them when they feel smart. People with a fixed view answer things like “It’s when I don’t make any mistakes” or “When something is easy for me, but other people can’t do it.” One person with a growth view answered: “When it’s really hard, and I try really hard, and I can do something I couldn’t do before.” Read those again. They are opposite definitions of the same word. For one group, feeling smart requires the absence of struggle. For the other, struggle is the ingredient. The second group has, in effect, learned to metabolize feeling stupid.
Dweck’s challenge to the first group is blunt: “Why waste time proving over and over how great you are, when you could be getting better? Why hide deficiencies instead of overcoming them?” She quotes a saying from the 1960s, “Becoming is better than being,” and adds the diagnosis: “The fixed mindset does not allow people the luxury of becoming. They have to already be.”
And she is clear about what the alternative actually looks like from the inside. Not comfort. Appetite. “The passion for stretching yourself and sticking to it, even (or especially) when it’s not going well, is the hallmark of the growth mindset.”
Most of learning feels like nothing happening
There is a version of this argument that is not about frontiers or mindsets but about time, and it comes from an unlikely genre: an aikido teacher’s book about practice. George Leonard’s Mastery, from 1991, is barely 170 pages, and its central chart is one you already know from experience: skill does not climb smoothly. It jumps briefly, dips, then flattens into a long plateau. Then, much later, jumps again.
Leonard’s point is that the plateau is not an interruption of learning. It is where learning happens, invisibly, while you feel like you are getting nowhere. To make progress you have “to be willing to spend most of your time on a plateau, to keep practicing even when you seem to be getting nowhere.”
He recounts the exchange every martial arts teacher eventually has: “‘How long will it take me to master Aikido?’ a prospective student asks. ‘How long do you expect to live?’ is the only respectable response.” And he passes along an old martial arts saying: “The master is the one who stays on the mat five minutes longer every day than anybody else.”
Leonard catalogs three ways people fail at this, and all three are strategies for escaping the feeling of not being good yet. The dabbler quits when the first thrilling spurt of progress ends and starts something new. The obsessive tries to force continuous improvement and burns out. The hacker settles onto a comfortable plateau and stops trying. Different personalities, same underlying refusal: none of them will sit inside the long stretch where you feel unskilled and stay there anyway.
The people who get good at anything are the ones who make peace with that stretch, and Leonard thinks the peace can turn into something better: “To love the plateau is to love the eternal now, to enjoy the inevitable spurts of progress and the fruits of accomplishment, then serenely to accept the new plateau that waits just beyond them.”
The expert’s handicap
Everything so far frames feeling stupid as a phase you pass through on the way to competence. Zen teacher Shunryu Suzuki would push further: competence is the dangerous part. Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind, assembled from his talks in 1970, contains in its prologue the most quoted lines in the whole literature of learning: “If your mind is empty, it is always ready for anything; it is open to everything. In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities; in the expert’s mind there are few.”
The expert’s mind has fewer possibilities because it arrives already full. It knows what should work, what the answer usually is, which ideas are not worth trying. That is efficient right up until the moment the world changes, and then it is a cage. Suzuki’s description of the alternative reads like a rebuke to every credential we collect: “In the beginner’s mind there is no thought, ‘I have attained something.’ All self-centered thoughts limit our vast mind. When we have no thought of achievement, no thought of self, we are true beginners. Then we can really learn something.”
For Suzuki this never ends. “The goal of practice is always to keep our beginner’s mind.” Which quietly resolves a tension in the whole argument: if the aim were to stop feeling stupid, mastery would be the exit. But the masters keep choosing the feeling on purpose, because the alternative, feeling like an expert, is the state in which learning stops.
Wrong feels like right
There is one more reason to treat feeling stupid as precious, and it may be the strongest: the feeling is rare, and its absence is not what you think it is.
Kathryn Schulz, who wrote an entire book about error called Being Wrong, starts by rescuing mistakes from shame: “Far from being a sign of intellectual inferiority, the capacity to err is crucial to human cognition.” The same inductive leaps that let us understand anything at all also guarantee we will regularly be wrong. Error is not a bug in the thinking machine. It is the price of having one that works.
But her sharpest observation is about what being wrong feels like from the inside. Nothing. “Call it the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle of Error: we can be wrong, or we can know it, but we can’t do both at the same time.” In her TED talk she lands the same point as a punchline: “It does feel like something to be wrong; it feels like being right.” Like the cartoon coyote who has run off the cliff but has not yet looked down, we are wrong long before we feel wrong, and in the meantime we feel great.
Take that seriously and the whole emotional ledger flips. Feeling smart is uninformative: it is what being right feels like and also exactly what being undetectedly wrong feels like. Feeling stupid, on the other hand, is information. It is the rare moment when the gap between what you believe and what is true has actually become visible to you. It should be treated less like an insult and more like a sensor reading.
Adam Grant’s Think Again is a book-length manual for engineering more of those moments. “If knowledge is power, knowing what we don’t know is wisdom,” he writes, and his model learner is anyone who treats their own opinions as hypotheses to test rather than possessions to defend. The book’s patron saint is the psychologist Daniel Kahneman, who told Grant why he seemed delighted, not defensive, when new evidence undercut his ideas: “Being wrong is the only way I feel sure I’ve learned anything.”
Grant’s name for the sustainable version of this stance is confident humility: confidence that you can figure things out, humility about how much you currently have. “It takes confident humility to admit that we’re a work in progress. It shows that we care more about improving ourselves than proving ourselves.”
Keep feeling stupid
Line the six of them up and they are describing one phenomenon from different altitudes. Schwartz: at the frontier of knowledge, feeling stupid is the job. Firestein: the whole engine of discovery runs on conscious ignorance. Dweck: the feeling only destroys people who believe ability is fixed. Leonard: from the inside, most real learning feels like getting nowhere. Suzuki: the feeling of expertise, not the feeling of stupidity, is what closes a mind. Schulz and Grant: feeling wrong is rare and precious, because being wrong feels like being right.
None of this romanticizes confusion for its own sake. There is a useless version of feeling stupid: staying lost in material you have no reason to learn, with no way to get feedback, no questions forming, nothing compounding. The test is Schwartz’s. Productive stupidity is “being ignorant by choice,” pointed at questions that matter to you. If the confusion is generating better questions than you had last month, it is the productive kind. If it is generating nothing but dread, change the question, not the ambition.
But if you are learning something real, the practical advice writes itself. When the feeling arrives, and it will arrive on schedule, do not read it as a verdict. Read it as a position report: you are at your own frontier, on a plateau that is quietly doing its work, with your beginner’s mind intact and your error sensor functioning. The people who go furthest are not the ones who feel stupid least. They are the ones who renegotiated their relationship with the feeling until they could stay in it indefinitely, and even seek it out.
Schwartz ends his essay with the closest thing this whole argument has to a promise, and it is a good place to end this one: “The more comfortable we become with being stupid, the deeper we will wade into the unknown and the more likely we are to make big discoveries.”
